Letting Your Teammate Push Over a Ref Does Not Help You Win, Favre

There are so many things I could talk about today.  The weirdos in Timmy’s, the fact that MPW asked me to order him a book from Chapters!, the wonderful bridal shower I went to on Saturday for my sister…all of these things are noteworthy.  However, the only thing I can think about today is how the Vikings no longer have an undefeated season after being beat by the Steelers
The QB getting sacked.

The QB getting sacked.

Sunday afternoon I settled down to watch my Brett (who I have a love-hate relationship with) and the Vikings continue their winning season streak. (I must also take this opportunity to apologize to MPW’s friend Heather who came over to spend time with him and ended up sitting silently on our couch while I extolled the virtues of the Vikings and the Packers.   Thanks for being so cool with it.)  I had a feeling this game wouldn’t be a pretty one.  And ugly it was.  At one point a referee got pushed over and trampled on by a Viking and the receivers must have had butter on their hands because making a catch proved almost impossible.   Awesome-Jenn-pumps-her-fists-in-the-air-and-crows-triumphantly plays were hard to come by.

Kudos must go out to Harvin who returned a kickoff for a touchdown which was quite the comeback from the foul he got just minutes earlier.  Peterson scored the other TD for the Vikings with a two yard rush.

I think what is so super sad about this whole thing was that the entire game I kept blaming the receivers, the defense, the offense…everyone but Brett because he was making some good passes.  I even defended the one that bounced off the goal post.  Eeesh.  At the end of the day the QB is the one who holds the team together and who controls the pace of the game.  The Vikings loss was Brett’s loss too. I think my not-so-little closet crush is getting in the way of me objectively despising him for not retiring and turning his back on the Packers (who kicked butt!!  Congrats Packers).

Closet Case

So I used to be a Brett Favre fan. I love the GB Packers and I am a total Cheesehead. I admit it. In fact, about 2 years ago I drove with one of my best friends out to Calgary because she got a new job there. I begged and pleaded to take the US route, preferably the one that takes us through Wisconsin. Then I found out she was going in the off season.  Feeling totally dejected I made her promise that when her 3 years there was up I would be able to come and drive her home and she would make sure it was at least in preseason so I could finally see a game.

Anyways, you don’t have to follow football to know that the last few years have been dramatic ones for GB.  To rip up Brett’s contract or not to rip up a contract, that was the question.  Ultimately, GB decided to let Brett go.  And you know what?  Who can blame ‘em?  Not me, that’s for sure.  The bloom was off the rose. They had a young team, and although good, Brett is a dinosaur in the sport. They needed to focus on their new QB and really start developing teamwork.  And Brett…he is throwing hissies like he used to throw the ball.  I realized at that point I am a GB fan, not a Brett fan.

So you can imagine my joy when last night I saw the Packers vs the Vikings on TV.  Could it be true?  An actual game on TSN? (They only show non-NY or Buffalo games twice during the season until Superbowl)  For those who do not know, Brett went to the Vikings who are GB rivals (see what I mean?  Petty.)  I settle down to watch the game and find myself secretly and then not-so-secretly cheering…for Minnesota?  NOOOO!  Seems that although I like GB, I just can’t wash that man right outta my hair.

Despite his epic tantrums and enlarged ego, I couldn’t help but want him to succeed. I mean, his wife was jumping up and down in the box looking like a high school cheerleader watching the coolest boy in school throw a TD just for her.  So I have had to come to terms with a harsh reality. I may still be a proud and loud GB fan, but I am also a closet Brett fan.
