Meet Kricket. (I Love Introducing People)

Today I am posting an interview with fellow blogger and book enthusiast, Kristyn aka Kricket. I know her from the real world, but you can check some of her stuff out at Things I Don’t Want My Grandma to Know. We’re also going to be talking about two books this week, so let’s just get to know each other, shall we?
So how did you get the nickname “Kricket”?
I was dubbed this moniker because I fell so deeply in love with Jiminy when I saw Pinocchio on the really big screen. That and because my eyes bugged right out of my head.
You picked two books for me to read this week, “A Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing” and “Sloppy Firsts”
Why those two?
I am a fan of “Chick Lit”. I will read anything with a pastel cover, something showing legs and enviable shoes…usually a purse or a ring is included in the cover shot. I like the sappy, frothy lives these ladies lead, mainly because I’m different from them. They have to choose between two men, have bank accounts that rival a C.E.Os (or in Becky Bloomwood-Brandon’s case, she pretends she does), and are usually thin and pretty. Both of these novels are considered “Chick Lit”, but they both feature characters who are far from perfect. Messy, awkward, sarcastic, bitter, jealous, nervous…basically all around unsure of themselves and their choices. They feel real to me. When I first read “Sloppy Firsts” I was living in a dorm feeling friendless at times, Jessica Darling was the friend I wished I had. In the case of “A Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing”, I had heard about it for years before I read it. I did the bad, bad thing of judging a book by it’s cover. “This isn’t a typical lady book! No bare leg clad in a Manolo or a Choo!! She’s wearing an Elmer Fudd hat!! Not for me!” I gave it a chance, and I kicked myself for not reading it sooner.
What was the first book you ever remember reading?
The first book I remember reading on my own was “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I was an early reader, my lovely first grade teacher Mrs.Nissen and my parents really encouraged that. I think I was eight or nine when I first read “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I had read things like “The Babysitters Club”, “The Boxcar Children”, and “Ten Kids, No Pets”, but “To Kill a Mockingbird” was the book that ushered me into a world of “grown up books”. My mom started reading it to me and out of sheer delight and curiosity, I finished it on my own.
Do you ever re-read books?
I sure do! There are too many to list, to me they’re akin to visiting with an old friend.
I know you are a HUGE film buff. If there was one actor you wish would author a book, who would it be?
Oh man…pretty much anyone provided they’re being honest. Half of these actors/actresses that write a book use a ghostwriter, that leaves out all of the really juicy parts. Maybe Robert Wagner, I would love to find out what happened to Natalie Wood. In the same vein, Christopher Walken. That would be entertaining.
Tell us a little bit about your blog/live journal. What do you usually write about?
I typically write what I would in a diary/journal. I’ve had my livejournal for almost ten years, It’s amazing going back and realizing what a huge goof I was (and still am). Sometimes I write short stories. Mainly I rant about boys, strange ideas/dreams, life in general.
What is one thing we should all know about you?
I’m basically an old lady trapped in a 28 year old’s body. I rant about my cats. I rant about inconsiderate youth. And I’m still a goof.
What has been your biggest “Yeah, That Just Happened!” moment? (one that was so awkward/embarrassing, but you just owned instead).Fred. Definitely Fred. The 82 year old man that sidled up to me at the gym and said, “Just so you know…I have access to Viagra”. Or my encounter with Dave Eggers in which he singled me out at a reading causing the full body blush several times. He then signed my book “your face was my beacon”. YEAH THAT JUST HAPPENED!
Stay tuned for more to come about “Sloppy Firsts” and “The Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing”.
Yeah, That Just Happened!
